PeCOD

Fast, green, accurate Chemical Oxygen Demand analysis

Information

The water quality monitoring system that is fast, accurate, easy-to-use and does not use dichromate.
The PeCOD® approach measures photocurrent charge originating from the oxidation of organic species contained in a sample to quantify COD.
The result is that the user obtains the most accurate measurement of organic pollution, in less than 15 minutes, with no use of dichromate or other hazardous chemicals
PeCOD® is the fastest available method to quantify COD from a wide variety of waste streams, offering users unparalleled access to accurate information to make impactful process control decisions.
COD analysis simply requires pushing the “run” button and the COD result is displayed in just a few minutes, making COD analysis simple and safe for all operations staff to use.
Operators no longer have to undertake potentially hazardous operations such as digesting samples with boiling sulphuric acid containing dichromate, mercury and silver salts (the “dichromate method” of COD analysis).
PeCOD® makes the laboratory a safer place to work, by eliminating the use of toxic and hazardous reagents in COD analysis.
PeCOD® COD analyzer systems are used around the world and trusted by government regulatory agencies, national laboratories and universities, industrial sites, food & beverage facilities and municipal wastewater facilities.

Do you need to determine the Permanganate Index (PI) for drinking water?

The European drinking water directive includes a parameter named “Oxidisability” with a 5mg/L upper limit for drinking water. Another way to describe to oxidisability is the “reactive fraction of TOC”, or the oxygen demand of the carbon in the water. Only reactive carbon will demand oxygen; therefore, it is different than TOC. TOC measures all the organic carbon species, neutral or reactive.

Outside the EU,  PeCOD is a direct replacement to the PI method with significant advantages. PeCOD is not approved for oxidisability in Europe, therefore, it will be applicable and valuable for non-regulated reasons.

Primarily utilities running PI to support treatment operations. For example, due to the simple and green method, operators can run PeCOD directly in the treatment plants, 24/7 instead of waiting for the laboratory. The operator simply starts the analysis, moves onto their job and MANTECH Pro will email the oxidisability result.

World Wildlife Fund (WWF) along with RBC Tech for Nature and Microsoft have named MANTECH’s PeCOD® as a finalist for the Nature x Carbon Challenge! This challenge is to support community accessible carbon analysis technology for nature-based climate solutions(NbCS) to combat biodiversity loss and climate change.
